Indian Workers in Qatar: Contract Check

India is one of the largest source countries for Qatar's workforce, with over 700,000 Indian nationals working across construction, hospitality, retail, and professional services. Qatar's recent labour reforms have significantly improved protections, but contract issues remain common. Here is how to protect yourself.

eMigrate Protection

All Indian ECR passport holders going to Qatar must register through eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in). The system verifies the Qatari employer, validates contract terms, and ensures minimum salary requirements. Your eMigrate-registered contract is your primary evidence if disputes arise.

Keep a copy of your eMigrate clearance and the registered contract. If the contract presented in Qatar differs from the eMigrate version, do not sign it — contact the Indian Embassy immediately.

Indian Embassy Support in Doha

Indian Embassy Doha: +974-4425-5777 (24/7 emergency line)

ICBF (Indian Community Benevolent Forum): Welfare assistance and shelter for distressed workers

MADAD portal: madad.gov.in — register grievances with the Indian government online

Open house: Embassy holds weekly open house for workers to discuss issues directly

Common Contract Issues

Contract substitution: Different contract presented on arrival. Keep your eMigrate version and refuse to sign without Embassy consultation.

Salary below minimum: Qatar minimum is QAR 1,000 basic + QAR 500 food + QAR 300 housing. If your total is below QAR 1,800, report to MADLSA.

Passport confiscation: Illegal under Qatar Law No. 21 of 2015. Report to Embassy and MADLSA at 16008 immediately.

Since 2020 reforms: Indian workers can change employers without NOC, leave Qatar without exit permit, and file complaints freely. These are significant improvements from the old kafala system. Know your new rights.
